Module Description:
This module starts with a basic geographical, historical and political survey of Europe. The very idea of 'Europe' is examined along with a philosophical discussion of the concept of identity in general and national identity in particular. The impact of European film festivals such as Cannes and Venice will be examined along with television coverage such as the Eurovision Song Contest, Champions League (The European Cup) and Eurotrash. The development and regulation of the media in several European countries will be compared and contrasted, for example Germany and Spain. Whilst the emphasis is on the academic study of media in various European countries in their own right this module will also explore media representations of Europe in general and 'the Mediterranean' in particular from a British point of view.
